The call is out for aspiring teenage singers from across the country to audition for the New Zealand Secondary Students Choir. The 56 current members of this esteemed national choir are reaching the end of their two-year contract, which culminated in a wildly successful international tour to the International Choral Kathaumixw Festival in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada. NZSSC was the 2016 Guest Choir at this prestigious festival that features choirs and soloists from around the world. The festival finale was a massed choir concert of one thousand voices led by the innovative Finnish conductor, Sanna Valvanne.

Winning hundreds of fans, the choir also toured Vancouver Island, performing ten concerts in all and receiving ten standing ovations! Kathaumixw Artistic Director, Paul Cummings said, “I knew NZSSC would be spectacular…. but oh my goodness, they were out of this world! They left the deepest of impressions on both Powell River, and our 1000 guests”.

Katie Trigg is a current NZSSC member and a Year 13 student at St Pauls Collegiate. The highlight of the tour for her was the way the choir was received by audiences, “Some of their reactions were mind blowing, they just loved performances!”

Auditions for the 2017-2018 choir are 26 September – 4 October in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Katie highly recommends auditioning to all young singers: “It’s an incredible opportunity to vastly improve your musicianship and be surrounded by a big family of wonderful people.”

NZSSC gathers the finest young voices in New Zealand and offers a once in a lifetime opportunity, a two year membership to learn from nationally recognised vocal teachers and consultants. The current Musical Director is Andrew Withington.

NZSSC performs a wide variety of music, including works from New Zealand's top composers. Many members go on to a music career; some achieving international success, such as Simon O'Neill, Johnathan Lemalu, Christopher Bruerton, Anna Leese Guidi and Madeleine Pierard. Benson Wilson (NZSSC member 2007-10) has just been announced as winner of the 2016 Lexus Song Quest.
